Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh

Brief Profile

Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh was born on 2nd September 1964. He acquired Qur’anic education under the tutelage of his father and Arabic and Islamic education under late Shaykh Muhammad Yacqub Alawo al-Adabiyy (Rahimahumallahu). Professor Shaykh-Luqman had his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ilorin in 1988; Master’s degree from the University of Ibadan in 1995; and Doctoral degree from the Lagos State University in 2007. He won the 1987/88 University Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of the University of Ilorin and was styled ‘‘University Scholar’’. His Doctoral thesis is titled: “Demonic Possession Exorcism by Yoruba Muslim Aafas in Osun State of Nigeria: A Critical Examination”.

Professor Shaykh-Luqman joined the service of the Lagos State University as an Assistant Lecturer in the Islamic Studies Unit in 1996 and rose through the ranks to the level of a Senior Lecturer in 2007. While in LASU, he was Examination Officer for the Department of Religions (1997-2008); Programme Officer for B.A. Islamic Studies Part Time Programme (2002-2008); Head of Islamic Studies Unit (2005-2008); Assistant Secretary, Al-Hadarah LASU Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies (2001-2005); Programme Liaison Officer for Affiliate Islamic Schools (2006- 2011); Co-ordinator, Post-Graduate Studies in Islamic Studies (2009-2011); Co-ordinator, Faculty of Arts, LASU Foundation Programme (2008-2011) and Vice-Chairman, Lagos State University Muslim Community (2006 to 2013).

In 2013, he joined the service of the Kwara State University as Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Islamic, Christian and Comparative Religious Studies and became a full professor in 2017. In Kwara State University, he was the College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences Co-ordinator for GNS programme and Editor (Islamic Studies) THE PEN KWASU Journal of Religious Studies and Head, Department of Religions, History and Heritage Studies. Professor Jimoh was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic). He is a member of the University Governing Council and serves as member of some Council committees.

He was the Chairman of some Senate committees such as Business Committee of Senate; University Admissions Committee; University Inaugural/Public Lectures Committee; Academic Planning and Curriculum Review Committee.

He was also the chairman of some University Management Committees such as University Examinations Committee; University Accreditation Committee; and University Ranking Committee.

Presently, Professor Jimoh is the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University. He is the Chairman of Appointments and Promotions Committee; Chairman, University Senate; Chairman, University/Community Relations Committee; Chairman, Joint Council/Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees; Chairman, Committee of Provosts and Deans; and Chairman, Minor Tenders Committee.

Prof. Jimoh has served as NUC’s Accreditation Panel member to some Universities in Nigeria. He is External Examiner to many Islamic Studies programmes in Nigerian Universities. He has supervised many Master’s Dissertations both at the Lagos State University (LASU) and Kwara State University (KWASU). He has also successfully supervised five PhD theses. He is a member of many learned societies, including the National Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies; National Association for the Study of Religions; and International Centre of Contemporary Research in Islamic Sciences (ICCRIS) UK. He is a member of the Advisory Board for Halal Compliance, Food and Safety (HacFoS); and member, Advisory Board of al- Birr Islamic Finance Consultancy and Training (BIFCONT) United Kingdom. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Diplomacy and Management (CIPDM).

Prof. Jimoh has to his credit, published books and numerous articles in reputable national and international journals. He has attended local and International academic conferences where he presented papers in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and United Arab Emirate. His areas of research interest include Qur’anic Studies, Islamic Theology and Islamic Medicine. He is happily married with children.
